San Diego is one of California’s most well known and recognizable cities. It is no wonder that many major network television shows have been both filmed at and/or set in San Diego. From local news, to serious dramas, reality TV, and even hilarious comedies, San Diego has been the backdrop and home of production for some of the most watched TV shows, as well as a number of lesser known programs. Major studios such as FOX, ABC, FX, and Nickelodeon have all aired shows that feature San Diego in some way. Even Netflix has an original series set in San Diego.
Shows that aired as early as the 1950’s, as well as popular shows such as Veronica Mars, Weeds, The Fosters, The Real World, and even The X-Files have been set or filmed in San Diego at some point. The city’s rich history with television is long and varied.
San Diego has a very large history of having shows centered around crime, the police, and the military. Shows such as the police drama series “Manhunt” (1959-1961) and CBS’s military sitcom drama “Hennessy” (1959-1962) started this trend. This tradition is still strong with shows such as Adult Swim’s police comedy satire show NTSF:SD:SUV:: (2011-2013).
There also have been a number of reality shows filmed in San Diego. Episodes of Tru Tv’s Beach Patrol and a number of episodes of COPS have been filmed in San Diego. Even MTV’s The Real World had a whole season set in San Diego. San Diego has also been featured on a number of travel shows that showcase the city’s great attractions.
With it’s iconic sights and sounds it’s no wonder that San Diego is part of the production of so many great TV shows.
